영혼이 맑은 그림
인류문명이 탄생된 이래 현대까지 가장 매력적이고 훌륭한 나라를 하나 꼽으라면 나는 주저 없이 고대 그리스를 택하고 싶다. 그것은 문명과 문화, 인간과 신(神)이 함께 어우러져 재미있고 신명나게 살았던 나라이었기 때문이다. 그들은 진리탐구와 인간성의 존중, 이상미 추구 등 인간이 가장 필요로 하는 일들을 충실히 이루었던 사회였다. 고대 그리스인들은 진리를 추구함에 있어서 답답한 신학(神學)에 구속 받는 일이 없었고, 어떠한 교의에도 구애되지 않았으므로 지극히 자유스럽게 삼라만상을 탐구하여 현대의 철학, 물리학, 수학, 의학, 예술 등의 학문에 지대한 영향 끼치고 있다. 인간성 존중의 한 예는 당시 도공들이 만든 도기에 자신의 서명을 할 수 있을 정도로 존중해 주었다. 인간 육체의 아름다움을 발견하고 예찬하며, 이상적 육체미를 미술과 운동경기로 표현한 나라는 아마 고대 그리스가 유일무이 할 것이다.
인체의 균형미, 건강미와 더불어 정신적 내면의 지성과 덕을 두루 갖춘 아름다운 인간을 고대 그리스인들은 칼로스(Kalos)라 하며 매우 높은 가치를 부여했다. 여성차별이나 노예제도 처럼 다소 아쉬운 점도 있지만, 현대인들이 가고 싶어 하는 길을, 학문과 예술과 인간의 육체를 끔찍이 사랑했던 그들은 이미 2500여 년 전에 이를 실행했던 것이다. 현대 우리 사회에서도 가끔은 그 칼로스 같은 사람을 만날 수가 있다. 그가 바로 의사 최인수이다. 그는 의학을 공부하면서 취미로 시작한 그림이 이제 30여 년을 훌쩍 넘었고, 거기에 틈틈이 음악연주까지 갖추어 지성과 감성의 균형을 이루며 아름다운 인생을 만끽하고 있다. 그의 그림은 주로 수채화로 깔끔하고 치밀한 표현과 능숙하게 숙달된 수채화 특유의 기법들은 이미 전문가의 경지에 올라와 있다. 의사로서 또한 작가로서 끊임없이 아름다움을 추구하는 마음과 안정된 정신자세는 본인 자신은 말 할 것도 없거니와 환자들에게 미치는 바람직한 영향은 무시하지 못 할 일이다.
이제 30여년이 넘은 그의 창작활동 가운데 작품에 임하는 사고의 변화가 요구되는 시점인 것 같다. 중국의 역경에 “네가 항상 같은 생각의 주변을 맴돌고 있다면 너는 이해와 얻음을 찾기 힘들리라”라는 말이 있다. 모든 미술은 상황적이다. 미술은 존재가 아니고 생성이기 때문에 고정불변이 아닌 시간과 가치관에 따라 변화 할 수 있어야 한다. 또한 철학자 임마누엘 칸트는 “미술작품은 아름다운 사물을 재현하는 것이 아니라 사물을 아름답게 표현하는 것이라 하여 미술적 아름다움이란 언제나 새로운 것일 수밖에 없다”고 하였다. 미술은 작가가 사물을 각자 다르게 관찰하는 법을 가르쳐 준다. 그리고 사물 속에서 아름다움을 찾을 수 있게 해주는 것 또한 미술이다. 현대 사회는 획일화 속에서 자기 색깔, 자기향기의 개성을 요구하고 있다. 그런 개성 있는 미술작품이 될 때 이 세상에 존재하는 보람을 느낄 수 있다. 의술과 예술을 알고 즐기는 진짜 멋쟁이 최인수에게 힘찬 박수를 보낸다.

Paintings Full of a Pure Soul
If I were asked to pick out one of the most attractive and greatest countries that ever existed on earth since the advent of civilization through modern times, I would choose ancient Greece with no hesitation. That's because it was the country which enjoyed the most interesting and exuberant life with civilization and culture, human beings and gods joined together. It was a society in which citizens successfully accomplished what human beings have always wanted most: truth-seeking, respect for humanity, and pursuit of the ideal beauty. In the pursuit of the truth, ancient Greeks never restricted themselves in any suffocating theological restraints or any doctrines, but rather, they explored all the things in the universe with their extremely free spirits, so they have heavily influenced almost all of the scientific fields, such as philosophy, physics, mathematics, medicine, and arts. They even respected humanity so much that they signed their autographs on potters' porcelains. Probably, the ancient Greece is the only civilization which has discovered and adored human beings' bodies and also expressed their ideal physical beauty in the forms of art and sports.
The men, who had physical symmetry and beauty with equal intelligence and virtues, were called "Kalos," and a high value was put on them. Of course, Greeks had more or less terrible flaws such as the slavery system and discrimination against women, but these people, who loved learning, the arts, and human bodies more than anything else, had already trodden the path which modern people desperately want to tread 2,500 years ago. Once in a while, we can meet the Kalos-like people even in our modern society. Doctor Choi, In-Soo is one of these very men. His painting career, which he began as a hobby when he was a medical student, has lasted over 30 years. He has enjoyed his beautiful life with harmonious intelligence and emotional balance. He is also able to play musical instruments that he practiced in his spare time. He paints mainly with watercolors. His clean and delicate expression and his unique skillful painting techniques has reached an expert's level. As a doctor and artist, it is very important to pursue beauty and a stable soul, not only for himself but also for his patients.
Now, maybe it's time for him to change his working style or thought, because he has painted more than 30 years. In The Book of Changes, which was published in China, there is a phrase that says, "If you continue to spin round the same thought, you can't get any understanding or acquiring." All art works are made by their circumstances. As art works are not beings, but creations, they should be able to change as the times and the value of the times require. Immanuel Kant once insisted, "Art works do not represent the beautiful things, but express things beautifully, so artistic beauty cannot but be always new." Artists show us how they observe things differently through their works. Art also makes us see the beauty of the real world differently. The modern world asks us to get our own individual colors and tastes in its standardization. Art works with such a unique and individual taste can have the value to exist in the world. I'd like give a warm applause to Choi, In-Soo, who knows and enjoys real and medical arts.
